KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian rapper Namewee (
pic) will be remanded for six days to assist in police investigations into the murder of Taiwanese influencer Hsieh Yu-hsin, his lawyer confirmed on Wednesday.
Wee’s lawyer Joshua Tay told Malay Mail that senior assistant registrar Muhammad Faisal Zulkifli granted the remand order for six days.
Separately, Dang Wangi police chief Assistant Commissioner Sazalee Adam also said that Wee will be remanded from Wednesday until November 10.
Earlier, Sazalee said the remand application will be made on Wednesday morning at the Dang Wangi police station.
Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, earlier confirmed on social media that he would fully cooperate with police investigations into the case.
On Tuesday, Kuala Lumpur police chief CP Datuk Fadil Marsus said the case of a woman found dead on October 22 at a hotel here had been reclassified from sudden death to murder.
Although he did not identify the victim by name, the case is believed to be linked to Hsieh, who was known online as Iris Hsieh or “Nurse Goddess”.
Local daily The Star on Tuesday reported Fadil as saying the cause of Hsieh’s death is still under investigation and pending post-mortem and toxicology results.
Previously, police confirmed the October 22 arrest of Wee in a hotel room in Kuala Lumpur, and that he was remanded for two days before being charged in court on October 24 with two offences for drug possession and drug use.
Wee pleaded not guilty to the drug charges and was released on bail, with the next court mention for the drug cases scheduled for December 18.
