KUALA LUMPUR: Young Malaysian pianist Vincent Ong (
pic) has made a remarkable achievement by being selected as one of the 11 finalists of the 19th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition, currently underway in Warsaw, Poland.
According to the official competition website, a total of 642 applicants from 28 countries vied for a spot in this prestigious event. After a rigorous selection process, 171 participants advanced to the preliminary rounds, with only 11 finalists, including Ong, securing a place in the final stage.
The finalists represent a diverse range of countries, including China, Japan, the United States, Canada, Poland, Georgia, and Malaysia.
Ong is competing alongside distinguished pianists such as Kevin Chen (Canada), Eric Lu (USA), and Piotr Alexewicz (Poland).
The final round, being held from Oct 18 to 20 in Warsaw, features each finalist performing two iconic works by the renowned Polish composer Fryderyk Chopin, including the celebrated Polonaise-Fantaisie (Op. 61). In addition, each pianist will present a piano concerto of their choice, accompanied by the Warsaw National Philharmonic Orchestra.
The 24-year-old from Penang has gained significant attention, with nearly 140,000 views on the official Chopin Institute YouTube channel.

The winners of the competition will be announced on Monday night, Poland time, which will be early Tuesday morning in Malaysia.
Held every five years since 1927, the Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious events in the classical music world and often serves as a launching pad for young pianists’ international careers.
