Department preparing rules on coral farming
“The temporary ban on coral exports is aimed at the Fisheries Department being able to provide a strong development and management programme, especially from the monitoring aspect, so that natural corals and their ecology are not threatened by coral trade activities,” Jeffrey said.
Kota Kinabalu: The State Fisheries Department has taken steps to make coral propagation (coral farm) an aquaculture activity and is preparing a regulation on coral farming and exporting.

Deputy Chief Minister cum Agriculture and Fisheries Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan said apart from abundant fish resources, Sabah’s waters are also rich in the most beautiful variety of corals, which are an eco-tourism attraction, especially diving.

He said it is estimated that there are approximately 550 species of living corals, including in the waters of Sabah, especially in Semporna.
