BONGAWAN: The telecommunication network and internet connection in Sabah is still weak and unable to fulfill the needs of locals, especially those in the rural or interior areas.
Bongawan Assemblyman Dr Daud Yusuf said this could be seen from the fact that in many areas the internet speed is still slow while telecommunication signal is also poor.

“Even in suburban areas including Papar and Bongawan, the service is still not satisfactory,” he added.
He pointed out that the government through the Communications and Multimedia Ministry (Kcom) announced last year that it was spending huge amount of money to improve telecommunication network in Sabah.
“But from what we can see today, the situation has not changed much. No difference although the upgrading work was supposed to have been completed in March this year,” he said.
He recalled that last year Communications and Multimedia Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa said five new communication towers would be built to benefit 14 villages in the interior.
He said the Minister had announced that 150 communication towers would be built together with 226 transmitter stations including upgrading to 4G while 399 existing stations would be upgraded.
Dr Daud, who is a Warisan supreme council member, said most of the areas in Sabah have barely enough signals and poor Internet connection.
“There is no point in upgrading to 5G when most of Sabahans cannot enjoy the facility,” he pointed out.
He asked when would Sabahans get the same treatment as other Malaysians.
Sabahans in the rural and suburban areas pay the same Internet rate as their counterparts in urban areas but the Internet connection quality is far from favourable.
