SHENZHEN: Two live parasitic worms were surgically removed from a woman’s arm in China after she sought treatment for a painful swelling, according to the
South China Morning Post.
The woman, identified as Wang, was admitted to Shenzhen People’s Hospital after developing a lump reportedly about the size of a quail egg.
Doctors discovered two live worms measuring around 10 centimetres inside the swollen mass and identified them as sparganum, a type of tapeworm larva.
Wang later said she frequently prepared raw frogs at home and used the same chopping board and knife for ready-to-eat food, which medical experts believe likely caused cross-contamination.
Doctors have warned that sparganum infections can spread to other parts of the body, including muscles, eyes and the brain, if left untreated, and advised the public to maintain strict kitchen hygiene.
