RANAU: The Native Court (MAN) here has entered a new era of service delivery and institutional development following its relocation to a permanent RM5 million complex, providing a more conducive and comprehensive environment for the administration of customary affairs and community governance.

The new building, funded through a Federal Government allocation, stands on a two-acre site about 1.8km from Ranau town and has been fully operational since June 6, 2025.

The upgraded infrastructure is expected to enhance the efficiency of services related to customary law, dispute resolution, community mediation and the preservation of traditional practices that continue to play an important role in the daily lives of local communities.

Beyond its administrative function, the Native Court remains a vital institution in Sabah’s governance framework, serving as a bridge between traditional customs and modern administration.

It provides a recognised platform for resolving disputes, safeguarding customary rights and preserving the cultural heritage of the State’s diverse indigenous communities.

Speaking during the Native Court of Ranau Thanksgiving and Kaamatan Celebration at the new complex recently, Ranau District Chief Muhasip Roman described the development as a reflection of the collective efforts and commitment demonstrated by community leaders, government agencies and customary authorities over the years.

According to him, the progress achieved by MAN Ranau today would not have been possible without the strong cooperation and support of all stakeholders involved in strengthening the institution.

He noted that such collaboration had contributed to the Native Court’s growing reputation for effective administration and service delivery.

“With the support and cooperation of all parties, MAN Ranau successfully received two major state-level awards in 2025, namely the Best Management Award and the Sabah Best District Chief Award,” he said.

Muhasip added that the achievements were not solely a recognition of administrative excellence but also reflected the dedication of customary leaders who continue to serve their communities with commitment and integrity.

He stressed that institutions such as the Native Court remain highly relevant in today’s society as they play an important role in maintaining social harmony, promoting mutual understanding and ensuring that traditional customs continue to be respected and practised responsibly.

The District Chief also expressed appreciation to Ranau Member of Parliament Datuk Jonathan Yasin, Datuk Amisah Yassin, Sabah Department of Native Affairs (JHEAN) Director Nordin Lossin and various government agencies and community leaders whose support, ideas and contributions had helped drive the development of MAN Ranau.

According to him, the continued success of the institution depends on sustained cooperation between customary leaders, government departments and local communities to ensure that services remain responsive to the needs of the people.

He further emphasised that the Native Court’s role extends beyond legal and administrative functions. It also serves as a guardian of cultural identity, helping to preserve traditions and customary practices that have been passed down through generations.

The Thanksgiving and Kaamatan celebration provided an opportunity not only to celebrate the institution’s achievements but also to recognise the contributions of customary leaders, village heads and community representatives who continue to serve at the grassroots level.
