Fuad explored separation but didn’t get any support
Danny said Fuad served as Sabah’s first Chief Minister before moving to the Federal Cabinet as a Minister for Sabah Affairs, with Peter Lo taking over as the State’s second Chief Minister.
Kota Kinabalu: Historian Prof Datuk Dr Danny Wong Tze Ken (pic) said Tun Fuad Stephens who led the Sabah side in Malaysia negotiations was a complex figure but unwavering and passionate about the wellbeing of Sabah and her people.

Danny, who is attached to Universiti Malaya’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences’ Department of History, said that while Fuad’s personality was difficult to pin down, three qualities defined him above all else.

“First, he had an unwavering conviction about Sabah’s interests. Second, everything he did, he believed he was doing for Sabah and then for Malaysia. Third, he was courageous.

“He was a fighter who would die for what he believed in,” Danny said at the Bicara Negarawan programme hosted by the Ministry of National Unity and the National Archives at the Le Meridien Kota Kinabalu, here.
