‘Beware who you rent premises for events’ call: SM Lok Yuk Hall used by banned group
Tham reminded owners of convention centers, public facilities and private event halls to conduct basic background checks on organisers and the nature of their programmes before approving any rental applications.
Kota Kinabalu: Likas Assemblyman Tham Yun Fook called on owners of halls and event spaces to exercise greater vigilance when leasing their premises following a recent enforcement operation against a deviant group in the area.

Tham, in a statement, commended the police and the Sabah State Islamic Religious Affairs Department for their swift, firm and professional action in handling a gathering held by a group previously declared deviant by State fatwas.

The gathering took place at the Dewan SM Lok Yuk. “This enforcement action demonstrates the continuous commitment of the authorities to ensure the law is upheld while preserving community harmony and peace,” Tham said.

He said any activity contradicting State fatwas and existing regulations must be taken seriously, as such programmes have the potential to cause public confusion and touch upon religious sensitivities.

He reminded owners of convention centers, public facilities and private event halls to conduct basic background checks on organisers and the nature of their programmes before approving any rental applications.

“Steps such as checking the background of the organiser, the purpose of the programme and the legal status of the organisation involved are necessary to prevent premises from being used for illegal activities or those that threaten public order,” he said.

While acknowledging that property owners are not directly responsible for every detail of a tenant’s event, Tham said that they still bear a moral and social responsibility.

“Owners must ensure their facilities are not exploited by parties that could stir controversy or violate legal provisions,” he added.

Tham further noted that close cooperation between the authorities, premises owners and the community is important to ensuring Sabah remains peaceful and respectful of the rule of law.

He also urged the public to verify religious information through authentic sources and to consult with religious authorities if they have any doubts regarding teachings or programmes organised by any party.
