KUNAK: The potential of Kunak as a key aquaculture hub in the state should be further strengthened.
Its extensive and deep sea areas provide a geographical advantage, supporting continued and more productive growth of the fisheries industry.

Assistant Minister of Youth Development, Sports and Creative Economy and Kunak Assemblyman Datuk Seri Anil Sandhu (pic) said development of the fisheries sector on the east coast, including Kunak, should be enhanced with federal support in financing, technology and industry guidance.
“The east coast areas of Sabah are among the districts producing high-quality fishery and seaweed products,” he said after officiating the Interaction Day with aquaculture breeders and operators at the Kunak Fisheries Department compound, recently.
The programme brought together 75 members of the fishing community and supporting agencies to improve understanding of initiatives, opportunities, assistance and incentives provided by the Fisheries Department.
Anil said the programme is part of efforts to improve the economy and productivity of the local community by strengthening the aquaculture sector, which has potential to generate income and create employment opportunities, including for youths.
He added that briefing sessions also highlighted industry challenges and biosecurity practices, and expressed hope such programmes would continue to support local operators and advance the sector.
