TAWAU: A dedicated tour guiding certification course will be implemented, making professional accreditation more accessible and affordable for local residents, said Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Dr Andi Md Shamsureezal Mohd Sainal.
This was one of the initiatives unveiled during the “Discover Tawau Bah” event organised by the Tawau Tourism Society in partnership with the Sabah Tourism Board, along with infrastructure improvements such as the construction of a new public jetty and upgrades to accommodation facilities at Tawau Hills Park.

Another highlight was the proposed establishment of the Tawau Elephant Sanctuary. Currently under discussion with the Sabah government, relevant stakeholders and conservation organisations, the sanctuary aims to become a world-class facility prioritising elephant welfare and conservation.
“The project is expected to generate significant employment opportunities, boost the local economy, and provide a safe and ethical environment for elephants in captivity across Sabah,” he said during the event on Monday.
In his speech, he highlighted the district’s rich natural assets, including the pristine rainforest of Tawau Hills Park, home to diverse wildlife such as gibbons and helmeted hornbills.
He also noted the unique geographical significance of Sebatik Island, shared between Malaysia and Indonesia, as well as the presence of elephants in Kalabakan and Irrawaddy dolphins in Cowie Bay.
The event also marked the launch of new tourism promotional materials, including videos, maps, and posters. Exhibitions featured a range of local tourism products and experiences, from agro-based offerings to eco-adventures and upcoming attractions.
The “Discover Tawau Bah” initiative reflects a strong commitment among stakeholders to drive sustainable tourism development, promote conservation, and empower local communities in Tawau.
Also present were the Sabah Tourism Chief Executive Officer Julinus Jeffrey Jimit and the Tawau Tourism Society President Tham Ban Fatt.
