Kota Kinabalu: Norway’s sudden cancellation of the agreement to supply a naval strike missiles (NSM) system and its associated launcher systems to the Royal Malaysian Navy may have a bearing on Sabah.
The missiles were to arm Malaysia’s long delayed new Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) that was supposed to be deployed in Sabah waters, among others.
It was cancelled even though Malaysia had paid €126 million (RM583 million), representing 95 per cent of the contract value.
Norway pulled the approvals in March, 2026 just days before the missile systems were due to be delivered by Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace. There was a second deal to supply the system to two other naval vessels.
