Kota Kinabalu: The Lun Bawang community in Sabah, though small in number, showcased its strength in preserving and promoting its vibrant culture through the successful hosting of the Night of Culture at the Klagan Hotel, recently.
Their traditional dance performances, Tarian Alai Bunga Arang and Rong Metaga, captivated audiences with their unique and striking presentation.
Organised by Pertubuhan Kebudayaan dan Kesenian Lun Bawang Sabah (PKKLBS), the event brought together more than 250 members of the Lun Bawang community in a lively celebration of unity, heritage, and tradition.
Guest of honour Noemi Dyena Johntren, who is Penampang Municipal Council President, highlighted the importance of cultural preservation and community engagement in Sabah’s diverse society.
The event showed the significance of safeguarding indigenous heritage and passing it on to future generations. It also reflected ongoing efforts to strengthen cultural identity and unity among indigenous communities, in line with initiatives championed by the Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA).
Such initiatives continue to play a vital role in preserving Sabah’s unique cultural landscape.
The association reaffirmed its commitment in promoting Lun Bawang culture and fostering stronger community ties through similar events in the future.
The Lun Bawang are one of the indigenous ethnic groups originating from the highlands of Borneo. Over time, they migrated and settled primarily in Sarawak, with smaller communities establishing themselves in Sabah and Brunei.
