Tamparuli farm given six months to resolve pollution
TAMPARULI: State Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry Minister Datuk Jamawi Jaafar has given a Kampung Kauluan livestock farm six months to resolve biogas pollution complaints from residents, or face possible stricter government action.

He gave the warning following a visit to the farm, Monday, saying he is not satisfied with the preventive and corrective measures being taken.

“I am still not satisfied with any of the steps that have been presented. I have set a schedule to personally come down to this area every three months to monitor progress and ensure that everything discussed is actually carried out,” he said.

He said if the problem persisted beyond the six-month deadline, he would not hesitate to recommend stronger State Government intervention.

“If within six months the problem persists and cannot be resolved, I will not hesitate to propose that the Government take more drastic measures,” Jamawi said.

He said community welfare cannot be sacrificed to protect a company’s operations.

“We do not want to protect a few companies while causing harm to a larger number of villagers. This area should set an example — even if it is strategically important for the State’s biosecurity in poultry and egg production, it must be free from pollution,” he said.

Jamawi also put forward two alternatives should the company fail to address the issue adequately. The farm, which has been operating for nearly 15 years, could either relocate its operations or implement a corporate social responsibility programme for the affected community.

“It is only right that the company contributes to the local community, whether through educational assistance, basic facilities or a welfare fund as a sign of respect to the residents in this area,” he said.

While acknowledging the livestock industry’s importance to Sabah’s economic development, Jamawi drew a clear line between growth and accountability.

“This industry is indeed important for the State’s economic development, but it must not come at the expense of the people,” he said.

He assured that his Ministry will maintain continuous monitoring of the farm and will not compromise on any party found violating regulations.

“We will take firm action to ensure the safety, health and welfare of the village residents are always protected,” he said.
