Kota Kinabalu: Warisan Tanjung Aru State Assemblyman Wong Hong Jun has raised concerns regarding the ongoing demolition works at the Tanjung Aru Flats following feedback received from the surrounding community.

Among the concerns highlighted were the strong impact, loud vibrations, and tremors resulting from the demolition activities, which may potentially cause damage, including cracks, to nearby houses.

“In addition, residents informed me that no prior notice or official announcement was given to them regarding the demolition works.

“This has caused anxiety among the surrounding community, who are worried about their safety and the potential impact on their homes,” he said in a statement on Sunday.

Following the complaints received, Wong personally visited the site and met with the contractor’s representative to discuss the matter and seek clarification.

After the meeting, the contractor informed him that the demolition activities would be temporarily suspended until proper notification and explanations are provided to the surrounding community.

Several matters requiring immediate attention were also raised.

These included tremors felt inside nearby houses during the demolition works, as well as excessive vibration and noise, with calls for strict adherence to approved working hours.

Attention was also drawn to dust pollution due to the absence of protective netting around the site boundary, as well as continuous water spray-down measures to control dust levels.

In this regard, debris and runoff from the spray-down activities could clog drains and increase flood risks, making proper clearing works and monitoring reports necessary.

The issue of asbestos roofing materials was also highlighted, with requests that only qualified specialists handle the removal works, supported by proper evidence and safety compliance measures, due to the risk of airborne particles and dust affecting nearby homes.

Future foundation piling works were also urged to consider less disruptive methods such as bore piles or micro piles.

It was further noted that five affected house owners have yet to receive official letters regarding the dilapidation surveys.

Wong also informed that the contractor will liaise further with the consultants regarding the matters raised.

He expressed hope that all relevant parties would continue to prioritise safety, proper communication, and the welfare of the surrounding community before any demolition works resume.
