The SBAUP project aims to meet the growing demand for treated water along Sabah’s west coast, including Kota Kinabalu, Beaufort, Sipitang and Kuala Penyu.
The scheme is designed with an ultimate capacity of up to 950 million litres per day (MLD) and adopts a “bolt-on” design concept integrated with the existing Ulu Padas Hydroelectric Project to optimise resource utilisation while minimising environmental impact.
The ceremony also signified the beginning of the project’s 42-month implementation period, described as a significant step towards securing Sabah’s future water supply, while helping to bridge the supply gap between urban and rural areas.
The first phase of the SBAUP project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2029, involving the construction of a 350 MLD water treatment plant in Beaufort as well as the installation of more than 200 kilometres of pipelines from Sipitang to Kota Kinabalu.
Implementation of the phase is expected to improve the stability of the state’s water supply system, thereby reducing the frequent water disruptions experienced by consumers in the affected areas.
UPPSB is a wholly owned subsidiary of UPP Holdings Sdn Bhd, a strategic joint venture company between Gamuda Berhad, Sabah Energy Corporation Sdn Bhd and Kerjaya Kagum Hitech JV Sdn Bhd.
