KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Nurses Association (Sana) is expanding its community service initiatives through the implementation of a pilot project module titled “General Care Guide for Bedridden Patients and the Elderly for Caregivers”.
Sana President Tomblow Ngadiran said the initiative aims to provide guidance and practical training to family members and caregivers managing bedridden patients or elderly individuals after they are discharged from hospital.

“This refined module emphasizes the mental and physical readiness of caregivers, as well as technical aspects such as personal hygiene care, nutrition, and patient safety.
“The module is not merely theoretical—it requires hands-on training, particularly in handling patients, such as proper lifting techniques and repositioning to prevent further complications,” he said after paying a courtesy visit to the Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sabah, Tun Musa Aman, at Istana Seri Kinabalu.
She said the purpose of the visit was to introduce the association’s leadership lineup and to present proposals related to home-based care training initiatives.
Tomblow explained that the pilot project will begin in the Kota Kinabalu area and will target caregivers identified as needing support, including those caring for elderly individuals with dementia or wandering tendencies.
“The training will be conducted by instructors from among SANA members themselves, consisting of registered nurses, including retirees who still maintain their Annual Practising Certificate (APC) through continuous professional development courses.
“Tun Musa responded positively and views this initiative as highly beneficial, and he hopes to see our commitment in successfully implementing the project, especially considering there are retirees who stopped working 10 years ago but remain actively contributing,” she added.
To date, Sana has more than 10,000 members, comprising nurses from both the public and private sectors.
