KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Ports Authority (SPA) Chairman Datuk Donald Peter Mojuntin said the State Government is aware that efficient port operations are crucial to Sabah’s trade, supply chain and economic stability, as the State depended heavily on imports, exports and maritime logistics.
He said SPA and the Ministry of Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship had already initiated several interim measures before the issue was publicly highlighted by former minister Datuk Ginger Phoong.

Among the measures was the relocation of Roll-on/Roll-off (Ro-Ro) operations from SBCP to Kota Kinabalu Port to free up additional capacity for container handling at SBCP.
“The move involves the preparation of space and operational arrangements to ensure the transfer is carried out in an orderly and effective manner,” he said in a statement, Saturday.
Donald said SPA was also actively working with relevant parties to provide additional space for container operations at SBCP.
He described the congestion issue as one involving national and State economic interests that required urgent and bold action.
According to him, the interim measures complemented the eight interim initiatives announced by Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick in early February.
