Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah United Chinese Chamber of Commerce (SUCCC) estimates the business community will be burdened by an extra RM30 million monthly from a congestion surcharge effective May 7, due to port operation inefficiences.
The congestion surcharge and general rate increase would mean an extra RM3,000 per 40ft shipping container which would be passed down to consumers.
SUCCC President Datuk Michael Lui Yen Sang Lui, who is also President of the Kota Kinabalu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KKCCCI), said the situation at the Sapangar Bay Container Port would cause retail price hikes for imported foodstuff.
SUCCC and KKCCCI members voiced their 20-year frustration at the lingering problem besides water, electricity and infrastructure deficiencies that hampered investment, industrialisation, creating of high income job opportunities and the by-passing of Sabah ports by international shipping.
