Kota Kinabalu: The Japanese Government has extended a grant of approximately RM251,890 to support Sabah Cheshire Home and Services under its Grassroots Human Security Project (GGP), aimed at enhancing welfare services for persons with disabilities.
The contribution was used to procure a wheelchair-accessible vehicle equipped with a lift, which will soon be delivered to the welfare home in Sandakan to improve mobility and accessibility for its residents.

The handover ceremony was held here on Thursday and attended by Head of the Japanese Consular Office in Kota Kinabalu, Nakasuji Hisaki, who represented the Japanese Government. Also present was Sabah Women, Health and People’s Wellbeing Minister Datuk Julita Mojungki.
Speaking at the event, Nakasuji said the GGP reflects Japan’s continued commitment to supporting community-level initiatives that directly benefit vulnerable groups.
“The Grassroots Human Security Project focuses on meeting basic human needs through timely and impactful assistance, especially for projects that bring meaningful improvements at the community level,” he said.
He added that the programme prioritises humanitarian-based support, particularly for initiatives requiring immediate attention and delivering tangible benefits to local communities.
Since its introduction in 1989, the GGP has funded 56 projects across Sabah and Sarawak, covering areas such as solar-powered electrification and improvements to medical facilities.
Nakasuji noted that the total value of these projects has reached approximately RM8 million, underscoring Japan’s longstanding partnership with communities in East Malaysia.
He also highlighted that the Sabah Cheshire Home project marks the first GGP initiative implemented in Sabah’s east coast region in the past 16 years.
He said the Japanese Consular Office in Kota Kinabalu remains open to proposals from non-governmental organisations and non-profit groups interested in implementing community-focused projects under the GGP framework.
The initiative is part of Japan’s broader efforts to promote human security and improve quality of life through targeted grassroots assistance programmes.
