Kota Kinabalu: Poor visibility due to inadequate street lighting may have been a factor in the hit-and-run incident where a Borneo International Marathon participant and Rela personnel were injured, according to Liberal Democratic Party Supreme Council member Eric Lau.
The runner in the 42km category reportedly fractured his neck in the incident early Sunday.

He said event organisers must strengthen safety measures for future events, including installation of temporary lighting, improved traffic management, increased deployment of marshals and stricter safety protocols.
“The Borneo International Marathon has tremendous potential to become one of the region’s premier running events. With better infrastructure, proper maintenance and stronger safety planning, Sabah can continue to build a positive image as a welcoming and world-class destination for international sports tourism,” he said.
He noted numerous complaints raised by participants regarding poor road conditions and malfunctioning street lights along several sections of the route.
Runners also expressed concern over uneven road surfaces, potholes and poor visibility with certain stretches in near-total darkness.
“These conditions raise serious safety concerns and must not be overlooked,” he said. The organisers said traffic management consultant Danasafe was engaged for the event.
Eric called on the Sabah Public Works Department and City Hall (DBKK) to take public feedback seriously and prioritise improvements to infrastructure, particularly in areas frequently used for major international events.
The Borneo International Marathon which is in its 16th edition, attracts tens of thousands of participants from countries including Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, and Brunei.
"When visitors have a positive experience, including safe and well-maintained roads, they are more likely to return and recommend Sabah to others. Conversely, poor infrastructure and safety concerns may negatively impact Sabah’s reputation as an international sporting destination,” he said.
