Tuaran: In a powerful display of environmental leadership aligned with Sabah’s sustainability agenda, over 21 Lions and Leo Clubs from District 308-A2 came together to launch the Sabah Blue Economy Initiative, a forward-thinking project that integrates marine conservation, community livelihood, and youth leadership.
The initiative draws inspiration from and aligns with the Sabah Government’s Blue Economy agenda, a sustainable development approach that promotes the responsible use of ocean resources to drive economic growth while preserving marine ecosystems.
By blending environmental restoration with income-generating opportunities, the project reinforces ongoing efforts to balance economic progress with ecological responsibility.
Spearheaded by Organising Chairperson Nadin Chen, the initiative focuses on sustainable clam farming, a nature-based solution aimed at rehabilitating coastal ecosystems while supporting the livelihoods of local fishing communities, particularly those within the B40 group.
The project was guided by Project Advisor Rizawani Fiona Heng, who also served as Project Coordinator, along with District Chairperson for Environment Joanne Ong, reflecting strong collaboration between experienced Lions leadership and youth-driven execution.
A key highlight of the initiative was the symbolic clam seeding and release ceremony held at a coastal site in Tuaran, marking a tangible commitment to restoring marine biodiversity and strengthening coastal ecosystems.

Clams, which typically reach harvest maturity within six to 12 months, offer a continuous and sustainable production cycle. This not only provides a steady source of income for coastal communities but also naturally improves water quality through their filtration process.
The event was officiated by Immediate Past International President of Lions Clubs International and Chairperson of the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF), Fabrício Oliveira, who commended the initiative.
“This is the first time I have witnessed such a comprehensive environmental project that integrates marine conservation, community livelihood, and youth involvement. It is truly impactful and forward-looking,” he said.
Beyond its environmental impact, the initiative underscores the vital role of youth in shaping a sustainable future. Leos, the youth arm of Lions Clubs International, not only led the project on the ground but also demonstrated their commitment to global humanitarian efforts, including supporting LCIF.
This reflects a strong belief that empowering youth today is key to building resilient communities tomorrow.
As Sabah continues to strengthen its Blue Economy agenda, initiatives like this highlight how community-driven action can complement government strategies — bridging environmental protection with socio-economic development.
With its integrated approach and strong youth leadership, the Sabah Blue Economy Initiative stands as a compelling model of modern service — where sustainability, community empowerment, and leadership converge to create meaningful and lasting impact.
The programme also received strong support from Majlis Belia Sabah, further reinforcing its focus on youth empowerment.
Through the Leo Programme, which engages young leaders aged 13 to 30, the initiative showcases how Lions Clubs are actively nurturing the next generation of changemakers.
Leos played a central role as organizers and implementers, demonstrating that youth leadership is not only encouraged but essential in driving sustainable community impact.
