KALABAKAN: Incomplete reporting that does not take into account the Malaysian government’s official explanation on the finalisation of the Malaysia-Indonesia boundary alignment on Sebatik Island may lead to inaccurate interpretations.
Kalabakan Member of Parliament Datuk Andi Muhammad Suryady Bandy (

He said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had explained in Parliament that the area in question falls under the Outstanding Boundary Problem category, referring to a negotiation zone that has yet to be finalised as belonging to either country.
He said the clarification showed that the finalised boundary was not a unilateral change or rushed decision but the outcome of prolonged bilateral negotiations, joint surveying work and reference to longstanding international agreements and conventions.
Andi said discussions on the boundary issue should be based on facts and recognised legal frameworks to avoid misunderstandings, adding that a diplomacy- and international law-based approach is key to maintaining stable Malaysia-Indonesia relations.
