KENINGAU: Drug smuggling activities along the Malaysia-Indonesia border, particularly in Bantul, Pagalungan and Nabawan, continue to pose a threat that challenges the country’s sovereignty and security, said Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail.
He raised this following the success of several integrated operations that led to major drug seizures in Tawau, Kota Kinabalu and Semporna recently.
“Certain parties are believed to be exploiting border routes to smuggle narcotics and prohibited substances into the country.
“The crime we are currently monitoring involves smuggling, and I believe there are certain parties taking advantage of the situation to commit offences involving narcotics or drugs,” he told reporters during the second series of the Madani Heroes Tour Programme at the Sabah Police Contingent Headquarters, here, recently.
According to him, the success of the operations demonstrated the continued commitment of authorities in combating smuggling activities and organised crime along the country’s border areas.
He said the vast and challenging terrain in interior areas requires close monitoring as well as strong cooperation among all security agencies to ensure any threats can be curbed at an early stage.
At the same time, communities in interior and border areas must play their role as the eyes and ears of the authorities by channelling information if they detect suspicious activities, he added.
Mohd Khalid said efforts to strengthen border control are crucial not only in combating cross-border crimes, but also in ensuring the nation’s security and sovereignty continue to be safeguarded.
He also said police are satisfied with the progress of the Nabawan District Police Headquarters (IPD) construction, which is currently 21 days ahead of schedule.
According to him, the construction of the new IPD is vital in strengthening security aspects and the preparedness of the police force, especially in interior and border areas.
“The new IPD is expected to provide more conducive facilities for PDRM personnel while enhancing operational effectiveness in tackling crime and maintaining the safety of the local community,” he said.
