More stable power supply in Sepanggar from now

Kota Kinabalu: The newly-completed power distribution substation (PPU) in Kampung Gudon is set to strengthen electricity supply in Sepanggar, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Sabah and Sarawak) Datuk Mustapha Sakmud.

He said the facility, completed last month through collaboration between Petra and Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SE), will serve the Gudon area and surrounding developments by providing a stable electricity supply.

“The substation comes at a critical time, as I am witnessing increasing construction activity in the area, including government buildings such as the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (SPRM) facility and multiple new housing projects,” he said during his working visit to the PPU on Monday.

He explained that before the Gudon PPU was operational, nearby areas relied heavily on the Alamesra substation, which carried a significant electricity load.

With the new facility now in place, that burden has been reduced, allowing for more balanced and efficient distribution.

“This improvement not only enhances reliability in Gudon but also frees up capacity in Alamesra to accommodate new residential areas, commercial shop lots, and other developments,” he said.

Mustapha, who is also a Sepanggar Member of Parliament, noted that the project directly tackles one of Sabah’s most pressing infrastructure concerns—electricity supply. Alongside water and road access, power reliability remains a key issue for residents and businesses.

“As Sepanggar continues to expand, the PPU Gudon is expected to play a central role in making sure that electricity supply keeps pace with development.

“Ensuring a stable power supply is critical—not just for daily life, but for attracting investment and sustaining long-term development in the region,” he added.

He expressed appreciation to Petra and SE, while hoping that similar projects will be rolled out in other parts of the constituency to prevent shortages and support economic growth.

Meanwhile, Mustapha mentioned that he had recently discussed the issue of water disruptions in the Alamesra area with the State Water Department Director.

He reported that some locations experienced damage affecting water supply, but repairs have already been carried out. The current focus is on stabilizing water distribution to the affected areas.

“As a short-term solution, I have arranged for water tankers to deliver temporary water supply to the affected communities,” he said.
