PAPAR: A 17-year-old girl, who was attempting to cross the road, suffered serious injuries after being hit by a car along KM19, Jalan Baru Papar – Kota Kinabalu, here, Wednesday.
District Police Chief Supt Heryan Mohd Tahir said initial investigations revealed that the incident occurred when a four-wheel-drive vehicle driven by a 23-year-old man, heading towards Kota Kinabalu from Papar, hit the victim at about 2pm.
“It was believed that the victim made a sudden crossing in which the driver failed to avoid (or stop) in time,” he said.
Heryan said the girl is currently receiving medical treatment at Queen Elizabeth Hospital I, Kota Kinabalu for her broken leg and head injury while the driver sustained no injuries was brought to Papar Police Station for further investigation.
The case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Earlier, a video recording believed to be from a dashcam went viral, showing the incident of a secondary school student crossing a road in front of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Kinarut before she was hit by car.
The 31-second video showed the girl was hit and thrown few metres from collision point after the vehicle could not stop in time.
