Kota Kinabalu: A total 150 teams from all over the country are taking part in the Mayor’s Cup Petanque Double Open held at the Likas Bay Public Park.
The competitors include national players who have competed in the World Cup and SEA Games, as well as the SUKMA teams of Sarawak, the Federal Territory and Sabah.
The opening ceremony of the two-day event organised by the City Hall, in conjunction with the 26th anniversary of Kota Kinabalu City was officiated by City Hall Director general Datuk Lifred Wong representing Mayor Datuk Seri Sabin Samitah on Saturday.
He said in his speech that the community sports programme kicked off with the mission to encourage active participation of the community in healthy leisure activities.
“More than that, it is the best platform to discover new talents and expand the network of relationships between clubs, associations and petanque players throughout Sabah.
“I am confident that this event not only supports the development of sports, but also has the potential to become an annual event that helps the development of social activities and the improvement of the local economy,” he said.

He was pleased to see the tournament received strong cooperation from the Sabah Boules Sports Association and the BAYU Boules Club.
He also hailed the organising committee and national coach Wahadhir Hamdan , who is the head of the technical committee for their contribution to ensure the success of the tournament.
