RANAU: Small-scale bakers producing Raya cakes and cookies in Sabah are facing growing pressure from both soaring costs and increasingly price-conscious consumers.
For Yadinah James, 40, a home-based baker from Kampung Ruhukon, the business she has sustained for a decade is becoming more expensive to run with each passing year.
“Back then, RM2,000 was enough to start selling Raya cookies. Now it takes around RM4,000,” she said in an interview with Daily Express.
The increase is largely driven by the rising cost of raw materials. Cocoa powder alone has surged from RM10-RM20 per kilogram to over RM50, while labour and electricity costs have also climbed.
