Kota Kinabalu: Sabah historian Avtar Singh said the contribution of Indians in the State’s history justifies the planned establishment of an Indian consulate in Sabah.
“There should be no issue,” said Avtar, the great-great grandson of Sgt Baghat Singh — the first Indian policeman to serve in North Borneo in 1868.
He was responding to negative comments by some netizens to the announcement by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim following the visit of Indian Premier Modi recently.
“The people sharing negative comments are not so aware of the many consulates that already exist in Sabah and the role they perform,” he said.
“Sabah had an Indian population since 1868 when the first group of Sikh policemen arrived to keep law and order on Victoria Island (Labuan) and subsequently in 1881/82 when the North Borneo police force was established in Kudat.
