Kota Kinabalu: The Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) is strengthening the State’s energy security and accelerating its clean energy transition through the regulated rollout of large-scale solar (LSS) projects, particularly in urban and high-demand areas.
ECoS Chief Executive Officer Datuk Ir Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid said the development of a 15MW large-scale solar plant here has an export capacity of 15 megawatts (MWac) and an installed capacity of about 22.5 megawatt-peak (MWp), enabling it to generate approximately 26 gigawatt-hours of clean electricity annually, enough to power more than 7,000 homes in Kota Kinabalu.

He said the development of renewable energy infrastructure was expected to generate economic growth, create local employment, enhance technical expertise and support sustainable industrial development in Sabah.
His speech was delivered by, Director of the Generation Capacity Development Department, Emelinah Akin Ampon, during the launch of the 15MW AC Large-Scale Solar Plant at the TG Solar Sdn Bhd Solar Farm Site near Teck Guan Trading Sdn Bhd, here, Friday.
Under ECoS’ oversight, several large-scale solar projects are being developed to diversify Sabah’s energy mix, strengthen the power grid and reduce reliance on conventional energy sources, in line with approved licences and technical standards.
All electricity generated at the site is exported through a 33-kilovolt underground cable to PMU Kolombong, allowing the plant to supply power directly into Kota Kinabalu’s grid and improve urban supply stability.
The 36.1-acre Kolombong facility combines ground-mounted and rooftop solar systems to maximise energy output while reducing land use in an urban environment.
The plant uses high-efficiency 715-watt photovoltaic modules supplied by JA Solar, with more than 31,000 solar panels installed across the site.
All photovoltaic modules have now arrived in Kota Kinabalu, with the final shipment currently being unloaded at the port, securing the supply chain and keeping installation works on schedule.
The project received approval from ECoS on Dec 27, 2024, followed by the signing of the Power Purchase Agreement in June 2025, and is targeted for commissioning on Dec 26, 2026, with full completion expected in the fourth quarter of 2026.
Separately, ECoS said the Teck Guan Solar Project remains one of the fastest-progressing LSS projects in Sabah, having been the first to sign a Solar Power Purchase Agreement and commence construction.
Nasser said the projects would help ensure a stable, reliable and affordable electricity supply for consumers across Sabah.
ECoS will continue working closely with Sabah Electricity (SE) and project developers to ensure all renewable energy projects remain compliant, transparent and aligned with the Sabah Energy Roadmap 2040 (SE-RAMP 2040).
