Kuala Lumpur: Ranau MP Datuk Jonathan Yasin urged the Federal Government to show evidence, if any, of the agreement that oil in Sabah and Sarawak was handed over to the Malayan Government during the formation of Malaysia.
“When we formed Malaysia, was it agreed that oil in Sabah and Sarawak would be handed over to the Malayan Government?

“If there are minutes, show the minutes of the meeting, in which Sabah or Sarawak leaders agreed to hand over oil to the peninsula and be fully controlled by the Federal Government,” he said.
He added that as far as is known, no such agreement existed.
“In fact, according to the Cobbold Commission Report (1962), land matters were completely under the jurisdiction of the Sarawak and Sabah Governments,” said Jonathan, adding that this matter cannot be allowed to continue.
“We are tired, tired that what we have been demanding for 60 years has not been implemented. What has been agreed upon has not been implemented.
“Listen to this seriously, we are not joking. We are seriously asking that what is rightfully due to Sabah and Sarawak be fulfilled and explained,” he said.
Jonathan also touched on the distribution of seats for Sabah and Sarawak that have accrued where it should have been expedited eight years ago.
“We want one-third of the seats to be returned to Sabah and Sarawak. Because of what happened in 1974, the PDA (Petroleum Development Act) was made, approved by Parliament.
“This is the reason why the rights and interests of the people of Sabah are not being protected.
“That is why there is no one-third power to object. Because Singapore has left, Sabah and Sarawak are already short of seats.
“Make a law so that when there is an increase in seats, then both increase and the one-third will always be guaranteed for Sabah and Sarawak,” he said.
