Tragic fall into sewage pit: Who to blame?
The Vigo that landed on its side inside the sewage hole.
LAHAD DATU: A passenger was killed while the driver suffered a broken arm after the Toyota Vigo they were travelling in skidded and plunged into a seven-meter deep jacking pit in Jalan Pantai, here, Friday.

The driver was identified as Wilyamil Ahajul, 34, while the passenger was identified as Muhammad Almadi Hassan.

District Fire and Rescue Station Chief Sumsoa Rashid said they received a distress call following the 7.04am incident and deployed 14 Fire and Rescue personnel to the scene.

Upon arrival, the commander of the operation reported that an accident occurred involving a Toyota Vigo that skidded and crashed into a divider before plunging into an open sewer hole (jacking pit) that was still under construction.

The team carried out an operation to rescue both victims from their vehicle which submerged in water using a rope and stretcher, and successfully brought out the victims.

“One of the victims was pronounced dead at the scene by Health Ministry officials, while the injured driver was taken to the hospital for emergency treatment.

“The victim’s body was handed over to the police for further action,” he said.

Sumsoa added that barriers were placed at the scene to prevent further accidents and the operation was called off at 9.07am after ensuring there were no other dangers at the scene.
