SOME 375 Primary One pupils from six primary schools in Sungai Manila received assistance through a Back-to-School programme at the Dewan Taman Cahaya, in Sandakan, on Sunday.
Sungai Manila Assemblyman Hazem Mubarak Musa said the programme received overwhelming response from parents and students, proving the need for such welfare initiatives to be continued consistently.

He said the programme was the second community activity planned for this year, following a free haircut programme organised last week in preparation for the new school session.
“Today, we distributed school supplies to the students involved, and also provided birthday cakes as a token of appreciation and to liven up the atmosphere,” he told the media after the event.
He added that various other welfare programmes would continue to be implemented from time to time, including special initiatives for the month of Ramadan, in line with efforts to reach out to the people and ease the burden of those in need.
Hazem also expressed appreciation to the Chief Minister for the confidence shown in appointing him as Sawit Kinabalu Head.
He said the position is normally held by the Chief Minister himself, making the appointment a significant responsibility that he would shoulder with full commitment.
“Given that Sungai Manila is a transmigration settlement area where the majority depend on the oil palm industry, I hope this role can be utilised to help the local community,” he said.
He said he will focus on ensuring Sawit Kinabalu remains the State’s strategic asset managed with integrity and competitiveness, while benefiting the government and people of Sabah.
