Kota Kinabalu: Kota Kinabalu Member of Parliament Datuk Chan Foong Hin launched the “Chan Jio Shopping” initiative by allocating RM25,000 to assist 200 students in the Kota Kinabalu parliamentary constituency in conjunction with the new 2026 school session.
Through this initiative, primary school pupils received cash vouchers worth RM150, while secondary school students received RM100 to purchase school necessities such as uniforms, shoes, and school bags.
Chan said the initiative complements the School Opening Assistance (Bantuan Awal Persekolahan, BAP) of RM150 per student, which began to be distributed on Jan 11, this year.
“For families with more than one school-going child, assistance of RM150 alone may not be sufficient.
“Therefore, together with my team at the Kota Kinabalu Parliamentary Office, we took the initiative to provide additional support so that every student can return to school feeling more confident and fully equipped,” he said, Monday.
He added that all recipients were selected based on a screened list prepared by the Kota Kinabalu District Education Office, involving B40 groups, including the poor and hardcore poor.
Among the schools involved are SMJK Shan Tao, SMK Perempuan Likas, SK Sri Gaya, SK Luyang, SKC Anglo Chinese, and SJKC Che Hwa Kolombong.
Chan also explained that the “Chan Jio Shopping” initiative will be implemented in stages throughout 2026 in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Hari Raya Aidiladha, and Christmas.
“Overall, a total of 800 students from 10 primary schools and 6 secondary schools within the Kota Kinabalu parliamentary constituency will benefit from this initiative.
“I would also like to record my highest appreciation to Tung-E Enterprise Sdn Bhd for their willingness to collaborate with the Kota Kinabalu Parliamentary Service Centre for the welfare of our students,” he added.
Beginning Jan 11, the School Opening Assistance (BAP) is being distributed in stages to more than 5.2 million students, including Form Six students, with a total allocation of RM800 million.
This initiative reflects the commitment of the Madani Government through the Ministry of Education Malaysia (KPM) in strengthening the national education system and easing the financial burden of parents and guardians.
