KOTA KINABALU: Upko president Datuk Ewon Benedick announced his readiness to seek re-election to defend the party presidency for the next term in the 2026 Upko polls.
He said this year marks party elections at all levels, with Upko scheduled to hold its congress on August 8 and 9 in accordance with the party constitution.

Speaking at the launch of the 17th Upko Triennial Delegates' Conference here on Wednesday, Ewon said members have full freedom to ensure a transparent and efficient democratic process, expressing hope the elections would unite the party and produce leaders chosen on merit and capability to serve the people.
Ewon acknowledged shortcomings under his leadership but said the Sabah state election underscored the need to strengthen party machinery at all levels, particularly in each state constituency, including possible constitutional amendments to reinforce state leadership institutions with the support of all divisions.
He also said Upko would strengthen the role of its elected representatives in party policymaking, diversify grassroots strength through the “One Division, One Organisation, One Cooperative, One Success Story” initiative, and welcome new members while requiring a two-year period of commitment before new branches or divisions are endorsed.
