SANDAKAN: Local agro-based entrepreneurs in Sabah have been encouraged to develop and brand their own products, with a focus on expanding their reach to markets beyond the state and into Peninsular Malaysia.
Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the priority was not only production but ensuring local products could compete and be marketed effectively nationwide.

He said agencies under the ministry, including the Farmers’ Organisation Authority (LPP) and the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama), were ready to provide guidance and market access for local producers.
Mohamad was speaking to reporters after launching a red durian-based sambal produced by local businessman Datuk Md Efendi, highlighting how traditional ingredients from Sabah could be turned into commercial products.
He expressed confidence that the red durian sambal, inspired by a fruit traditionally grown in areas such as Tongod and Kinabatangan, would gain acceptance locally and nationally, citing how products like keropok lekor have expanded far beyond their original markets.
