Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Dr Andi Md Shamsureezal Mohd Saina, said only 45 premises were found to be licensed while 59 premises are in the process of applying.
The initiative is a proactive measure to strengthen security levels and enhance confidence among domestic and international tourists.
A meeting identified several key issues requiring immediate attention, including security aspects and compliance with directives and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) set by the authorities.
The need for more integrated coordination among relevant agencies was also highlighted.
The Ministry would consolidate all tourism safety-related SOPs involving various enforcement and technical agencies.
These harmonised SOPs would be published and made publicly accessible via the official website to ensure clear understanding and comprehensive compliance by tourism industry operators and stakeholders.
It would also carry out integrated enforcement operations in collaboration with enforcement agencies and local authorities to ensure compliance with licensing requirements, safety SOPs, and to maintain tourist safety at the prescribed standards.
The ministry is committed to ensuring that Semporna continues to be a safe, well-organised and competitive tourism destination, in line with the ongoing efforts of the State Government to preserve Sabah’s tourism image at both national and international levels.
The security situation in the District of Semporna is assured and under control, making it a safe destination for visitors.
