Kunak leader backs villagers’ right to choose village heads
KUNAK: A local community leader has expressed support for Kunak Assemblyman Dato’ Sri Anil Sandhu’s (pic) suggestion that villagers be given full authority to choose their own leaders for the Village Head and Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) posts.

Incumbent Kunak Tiga Village Chief Panglima Abdul Lahil Sarail said the appointment of any Village Head and JKKK should go through a screening process by the district-level appointment committee, in addition to receiving the majority support of residents in the area concerned.

“Although elected representatives may have the ‘power’ to select certain individuals for these positions, a selection process that includes screening by the district committee and the support of villagers is appropriate to ensure that village administration is carried out properly and in an orderly manner,” he said.

He was commenting on the recent selection of the Village Head, JKKK Chairman and JPKK members of Kampung Cenderawasih, which took into account the support of residents and was not based solely on the choice of political leaders.

It is understood that Anil had fully entrusted the villagers to choose their own leaders for the positions of Village Head and JKKK of Kampung Cenderawasih during his visit to the village last week.

In the same development, Abdul Lahil said that the selection of village leadership should also take into account an individual’s criminal record before they are chosen to lead.

“This is why the screening process through the district committee, involving relevant agencies, is important in this matter,” he added.
