Kota Kinabalu: A total of 298 students achieved Mumtaz (distinction) grades in the 2025 Sijil Rendah Ugama (SRU) and Sijil Menengah Ugama (SMU) examinations, marking the highest achievement in Sabah over the past decade.
Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif said that 213 students obtained Mumtaz in the SRU examination, while another 85 students achieved the same grade in the SMU examination. He said this during a media conference for the 2025 SRU and SMU examinations official results announcement on Thursday.
“The overall SRU performance recorded a very encouraging achievement with an 83 per cent pass rate, representing a 4.76 per cent increase compared to 2024,” said Arifin, who also holds the Religious Affairs portfolio.
He said 4,553 candidates passed the examination, with grade breakdowns showing 213 achieving Mumtaz, 747 obtaining Jayyid Jiddan, 2,240 earning Jayyid and 1,353 securing Maqbul grades.
For the SMU examination under the Kurikulum Bersepadu Dini (KBD) stream, 311 candidates registered and 306 sat for the examination across five Sekolah Menengah Agama Negeri (SMAN), two Sekolah Menengah Agama Bantuan Kerajaan and a Sekolah Menengah Agama Rakyat.
Additionally, the SMU Kurikulum Bersepadu Tahfiz (KBT) examination at SMAN Kunak saw 25 candidates sit for the exam, with the State Average Grade improving to 2.32, an increase of 0.56 compared to 2024.
A total of 22 Sekolah Agama Negeri (SAN) across Sabah recorded 100 per cent pass rates in the SRU examination, with SMAN Toh Puan Hajjah Rahmah emerging as the top-performing school with a School Average Grade (GPS) of 1.69 and achieving 100 per cent pass rate.
Nur Aliya Raju Karno from SAN Pekan Beaufort was named the State’s Top Student for the 2025 SRU examination with an outstanding achievement of 98 per cent.
For the SMU KBD examination, the top student was Balqis Nur Danisha Bahari from SMAN Toh Puan Hajjah Rahmah with 94.68 per cent, while for the KBT stream, Muhammad Faezz Hakim Rahim from SMAN Kunak achieved the top position with 87.15 per cent.
Arifin said the Sabah State Government is committed to continuously improving the quality of religious education through the provision of learning facilities, conducive infrastructure and ongoing training for teachers.
