MANILA: Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. said on Saturday that all its relevant government agencies have been placed on full alert as Typhoon Uwan (international name Fung-wong) intensifies and moves closer to Northern Luzon, the Philippine News Agency (PNA) reported.
In a statement, Marcos urged the public to remain calm but vigilant, stressing the importance of preparedness to minimise the potential impact of the typhoon.
“We continue to monitor the intensification of Typhoon Uwan as it approaches Northern Luzon.
“All government agencies are on full alert and have taken immediate action to ensure the safety of our fellow citizens,” he said.
Marcos advised the public to follow safety advisories issued by local government units (LGUs) and to keep monitoring official weather updates.
As of 11 am, Typhoon Uwan was located 680 km east of Borongan City, Eastern Samar, or 760 km east of Catarman, Northern Samar, moving westwards at 35 kph, with maximum sustained winds of 140 kph near the centre and gusts of up to 170 kph.
According to the weather bureau, Uwan is forecast to rapidly intensify and may reach the super typhoon category by Saturday night or Sunday, with faster intensification not ruled out due to favourable conditions.
