KUALA LUMPUR: Sabak Bernam MP Kalam Salan has suggested that the National Monument be redesigned to reflect the true likeness of local soldiers who fought for Malaysia’s independence,
World of Buzz reported.
He said the figures depicted on the bronze sculpture appear "too European", with features such as sharp noses and tall builds that do not resemble Malaysians.
Speaking in the
Dewan Rakyat on Thursday, the Perikatan Nasional MP questioned whether the monument inadvertently idolises colonial figures rather than those who resisted them.
Kalam said the monument, built in 1966, should better represent the country’s own heroes to inspire a stronger sense of patriotism.
He urged the government to consider renovating the structure to ensure it truly symbolises the identity and sacrifices of Malaysian soldiers.
