PUTRAJAYA: The Ministry of Education will introduce a new “co-teaching” method involving two teachers in a single classroom and a dedicated weekly slot for character building as part of a major curriculum reform set for 2027.

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said in an interview with Berita Harian that the new curriculum is designed to balance academic excellence with strong moral values, discipline, and integrity.

Fadhlina explained that the co-teaching approach is a key innovation designed to make learning more effective and engaging.

It will involve two teachers collaborating as equal educators in one class, sharing responsibility for the lesson.

Kota Kinabalu: KOTA KINABALU: Fiesta Mega Raya (FMR) 2026 is set to be the largest and most prestigious Hari Raya celebration in Sabah, taking place from March 7 to 18, at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), here.
“This active classroom interaction ensures every student receives sufficient attention, helping to reduce learning gaps and dropout risks,” she said.

The new curriculum will also emphasise integrated learning, where subjects like English, Science, and Music could be combined in a single session to promote cross-disciplinary understanding.

Fadhlina added that the co-teaching model also serves as an immediate strategy to better manage overcrowded classrooms while long-term infrastructure improvements are underway.

In a significant shift, the 2027 curriculum will integrate moral and character values into all subjects, moving beyond the previous focus on only Islamic or Moral Education classes.

This will be reinforced by a dedicated 60-minute weekly Character Building Programme for both primary and secondary students, allowing for structured activities that encourage positive behaviour and moral reflection.

Fadhlina clarified that the reform modernises teaching methods to suit current needs without altering the core principles of national education.

Preparatory training for teachers has already begun to ensure full readiness for the 2027 rollout.

The character-building programme will also be introduced in phases, starting with preschool students next year. - Malay Mail
