Kuala Lumpur: Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin says he is not aware about reports that six MPs from the party were ready to opt out of defending their parliamentary seats at the next general election.

Asked about the matter at a Bersatu event here, he simply replied “Don’t know”. When pressed whether the MPs had contacted him, he just shook his head.

Earlier today, Utusan Malaysia reported that six MPs from Bersatu were ready to opt out of defending their seats at the next general election.

It identified the MPs as Shabudin Yahaya (Tasek Gelugor), Muslimin Yahaya (Sungai Besar), Abdul Rahim Bakri (Kudat), Fasiah Fakeh (Sabak Bernam), Azizah Dun (Beaufort) and Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang).

Except for Muslimin, the other five defected from Umno after winning their seats on a Barisan Nasional ticket at the 14th general election in 2018.

FMT has reached out to the MPs for comment.

Hamzah, speaking at the first congress of Bersatu’s federal territories division, told delegates the party must stay relevant, “not just now but for 50 years to come”.

Noting that Bersatu was “once a very strong party”, he called on the delegates to reflect on whether they had ever thought about what the party’s strengths were, and how it could build on them.

Pointing out the absence of several divisional heads at the congress, he reminded them of the need to commit themselves to the party’s cause, warning that those who were only in the party in a bid to become parliamentarians would not have a future in Bersatu.
