TAMBUNAN: Samples taken from Sungai Masuk (raw water intake) recorded a high Total Coliform Count of 250,000 CFU/100mL.
The result indicates the presence of potentially harmful bacteria that could threaten public health.
In contrast, the water sample from the River Water Intake Channel (air sungai intake) recorded a much lower count, at only 5,600 CFU/100mL at the same time.
The water quality tests were done by the Sabah Fisheries Department.
The tests, carried out by ALS Technichem (M) Sdn Bhd, revealed a significant Total Coliform Count in the sampling area, raising concerns among various parties regarding the quality of the water source.
A high Total Coliform Count typically serves as an indicator of water hygiene quality and suggests the possible presence of other harmful organisms that may negatively impact human health and the ecosystem.
The Department plans to further investigate the test results by reviewing the water quality status in the areas involved and take the necessary measures to ensure the safety of the water source for the well-being of the community.
Effective monitoring and protection of water resources are essential to safeguarding public health and environmental sustainability.
