RANAU: The completion of the new Kg Penulangon Hall is expected to provide a much-needed venue for community activities, creating new opportunities for residents to strengthen social ties, organise development programmes and preserve local cultural traditions.

For many rural communities, village halls serve as more than just physical structures. They function as gathering places where residents come together to discuss local issues, conduct community programmes, celebrate cultural events and foster cooperation across generations.

The importance of such facilities was highlighted during the official opening of the Kg Penulangon Hall, held in conjunction with the village’s Kaamatan Festival celebration recently.

Officiating the event, Ranau Member of Parliament Datuk Jonathan Yasin said the new hall would serve as an important community hub capable of accommodating educational programmes, cultural activities, social gatherings and a wide range of community development initiatives.

He noted that facilities such as village halls play a vital role in strengthening unity, promoting volunteerism and encouraging greater participation in community affairs.

“Village halls are not merely buildings. They provide a common space where residents can gather, exchange ideas, strengthen relationships and work together for the benefit of the community,” he said.

Jonathan also congratulated the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) and the residents of Kg Penulangon for their commitment and collective effort in bringing the project to fruition.

During the event, he emphasised the importance of preserving the Kaamatan Festival as a cultural heritage that reflects gratitude for the harvest while serving as a symbol of unity and harmony among Sabah’s diverse communities.

He further called on the younger generation to continue appreciating and safeguarding the customs, traditions and cultural values inherited from their ancestors so that they remain relevant and respected in an increasingly modern society.

The celebration featured a variety of cultural performances, traditional competitions and community activities involving residents of all ages, reflecting the vibrant spirit of togetherness that continues to characterise village life.

Beyond the festivities, the opening of the new hall represents an investment in the future of Kg Penulangon. With a dedicated venue now available for community programmes and gatherings, residents are expected to benefit from greater opportunities for engagement, learning and cooperation.

As communities continue to grow and evolve, facilities such as the Kg Penulangon Hall remain essential in bringing people together, strengthening social cohesion and supporting the long-term development of rural areas.
