Kota Kinabalu: The Asean Federation of Engineering Organisations (AFEO) has conferred its Honorary Fellow Award on former Sabah tourism minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew in recognition of her support for regional engineering collaboration.
The award was presented in conjunction with the 51st anniversary dinner of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Sabah Branch and the installation of its new branch chairman at a ceremony held on Saturday night.

IEM president Ir. Yau Chau Fong said the honour reflected appreciation for Liew’s leadership and her ministry’s role in supporting the 42nd Conference of the Asean Federation of Engineering Organisations (CAFEO 42), hosted in Kota Kinabalu in 2024.
He said participation from engineers across nine Asean countries at CAFEO 42 had helped strengthen regional cooperation within the engineering profession.
Liew, who served as Sabah’s Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment at the time, said she was honoured by the recognition and dedicated the award to the engineering community.
She said her ministry had supported CAFEO 42, including funding assistance and cultural performances by the Sabah Cultural Board, given the event’s economic and tourism significance.
“This conferment is reserved for distinguished individuals who have rendered outstanding services to the engineering profession and Asean,” IEM said in a statement.
Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam represented Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor at the event.
IEM said Liew had earlier been nominated for the AFEO Honorary Fellow award, with the nomination endorsed by the federation’s governing board in August 2025.
