KOTA BHARU: Four children from a family in Pasir Mas are expected to return to school after a social activist helped secure housing closer to an educational facility.
Social activist Abbe Hae said financial hardship had forced a 15-year-old Form Three student to leave school and work washing cars for RM80 a week to support her mother and four younger siblings.
He said three of the younger children, who are of primary school age, had also been unable to attend school because of financial constraints and the long distance to the nearest school.
The family's situation worsened after they were forced to leave their rented home following four months of unpaid rent, and the property was subsequently rented to another tenant.
According to Abbe, the children's father is serving a prison sentence for a non-drug-related offence, leaving the mother struggling to care for the family.
Sharing the case on Facebook, he said the teenager had been using her earnings from washing cars to buy rice and other basic necessities for the household.
Abbe and his team eventually found a vacant rental house and moved the family there on June 8, enabling the children to resume their education after months of disruption.
