KUALA TERENGGANU: An 18-year-old died after a streetlight fell and pierced the front of the van he was travelling in during an accident here on Tuesday.
Police said the incident is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, while the victim’s father said the family intends to take legal action against the driver of a red Volkswagen Golf involved in the crash.
The victim, Wah Han Keong, was travelling with his father, Wah Tee Tun, 49, when the car travelling in the opposite direction crashed into a lamp post on the road divider, causing the pole to fall onto their van.
Videos circulating online showed the car mounting the divider and skidding into Wah’s path at the same moment the dislodged streetlight pierced through the vehicle.
Wah, who suffered minor injuries to his right arm, said the accident happened too quickly for him to react and told Sinar Harian he discovered his son had suffered fatal injuries when he tried to move him after the crash.
Han Keong’s remains were sent to Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah for a post-mortem, while relatives described him as a sensible and filial child who had been helping with his father’s electrician work since January and was due to begin automotive studies in June.
