PAPAR: Giving youth a second chance in their careers benefits both the state and the nation, especially as the demand for skilled workers continues to grow.
Montfort Youth Training Centre (MYTC) continues transforming the lives of young people in Sabah, particularly those who may not have succeeded in the traditional academic system, by preparing them for the workforce.
At its 25th Graduation Ceremony held at the Residential Campus in Kinarut, 44 trainees completed their training and are now ready to enter various industries.
The ceremony was officiated by Deputy Chief Minister I cum State Minister of Works and Utilities Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam, who highlighted the importance of second chances and mentorship.
“Some people succeed through academic excellence, while others succeed because someone believed in them, guided them, trained them, and gave them a second chance to discover their strengths and potential.
“I believe Montfort has been doing exactly that for many years and will continue to do so for many more years ahead,” he said.
Dr Joachim also stressed the growing need for skilled technical workers in Sabah, especially in infrastructure, construction, tourism, agriculture, manufacturing and technical services.
“Your training in welding, facilities maintenance and carpentry, automotive, and oil palm plantation conductorship is not only relevant but very important. You are part of Sabah’s future development,” he said.
The Best Trainee Award was presented to Joshua Gadius, 24, from Kampung Mangkatai, Tambunan. Despite facing hardships and struggling in school, Joshua persevered and showed remarkable personal growth during his time at MYTC.
Starting as the laundry in-charge, he later earned the trust of officers and fellow trainees, eventually becoming a Prefect and active chapel ministry member. His journey reflects how second chances can change lives.
The Academic Achievement Award was also presented to hostel boarders from San Damiano Boys’ Hostel and St. Mary Youth Hostel who excelled in their SPM examinations.
The awards went to Fredrey Dainel Daimeh and Edbert Erl Lawrence.
Through Montfort’s Job Placement Scheme, many graduates have secured internships and employment with members of the Malaysian Estate Owners’ Association, as well as resorts and established companies in Sabah and Peninsular Malaysia.
The centre also announced the return of its Girls’ Programme, offering training in Hairdressing and Barbering together with an Entrepreneurship Course.
The programme, beginning June 27, is open to young women aged 16 to 22 and will be conducted at St. Gabriel’s House in Donggongon. It aims to provide safe, inclusive, and skills-based training to help young women build a better future.
