PENAMPANG: The Harvest Festival, or Kaamatan, celebrated throughout May, is not only a time of merrymaking but also a moment to reflect on the past by recalling the traditions, practices and way of life of earlier generations.
Efforts are being made to revive traditional games from the olden days, giving younger generations the opportunity to see and experience them firsthand.
The Sabah Cultural Board (Lembaga Kebudayaan Sabah) recently organised a series of traditional games in Donggongon township, drawing residents young and old to watch and participate in endurance challenges.
Among the highlights was a game that mimics “catching buffaloes” using large ropes and a mock animal, a slingshot challenge where participants aimed at targets, and an archery-inspired contest testing precision and strength.
