KOTA KINABALU: SMJ Energy Sdn Bhd and Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) have defended Sabah’s equity participation in the Sabah Ammonia Urea (Samur) project, rejecting recent online allegations as misleading.
SMJ Energy said Sabah holds a 25pc equity stake in Samur through Petronas Chemicals Fertilizer Sabah Sdn Bhd, secured via a commercial agreement with Petronas, and has been receiving dividends since 2023.
It added that claims Sabah receives insufficient returns are baseless, stressing Samur’s role as a major fertilizer facility contributing to industrial growth, jobs and investment in Sipitang.
Gagasan Information Chief Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan also dismissed claims circulating on social media, saying they were inaccurate and misrepresented Samur’s operations.
He clarified that the plant produces finished fertilizer products in Sabah and does not send raw output for processing elsewhere.
He also criticised the use of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sabah’s image in political content and said legal action is being considered against 'Mawar Channel' if the posts are not withdrawn.
Both SMJ Energy and Gagasan Rakyat said Sabah’s involvement in Samur reflects long-term economic strategy and urged the public to rely on verified information rather than social media claims.
